Understanding family sponsorship in the UAE

The UAE residency system allows residents to bring their family members under a legal framework known as family sponsorship.

In this system, the resident (sponsor) becomes the legal guarantor for their dependents. This means the family members’ residency is directly linked to the sponsor’s visa—if the sponsor’s visa is cancelled or expires, the dependents’ visas are also affected.

Key facts about family residency in 2026

Residency validity: 1, 2, 5, or 10 years depending on the sponsor’s visa type.

Who can be sponsored: spouse, children, parents, and in some cases domestic workers.

Visa documents: digital residence visa and Emirates ID.

Authorities: GDRFA (Dubai) and ICP (Abu Dhabi & Northern Emirates).

Family visa requirements

Minimum salary requirement

A minimum monthly salary of AED 4,000 is generally required, or AED 3,000 if accommodation is provided by the employer.

Housing requirement

Sponsors must provide proof of accommodation such as an Ejari (Dubai) or tenancy contract (other emirates), along with a recent utility bill.

These requirements apply to standard residency visas. Golden Visa holders are generally exempt from salary and housing proof requirements.

Who can you sponsor?

Spouse and children

Residents can sponsor their spouse and children under standard eligibility rules. In special cases, sponsorship of two wives may be permitted subject to approval.

Sons can be sponsored under age restrictions depending on visa type, while daughters can generally remain under sponsorship until marriage.

Stepchildren may also be sponsored, provided a deposit is paid and a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the biological parent is submitted.

Parents sponsorship

Sponsoring parents is treated as a humanitarian case and requires stricter eligibility conditions.

Authorities assess the sponsor’s income, accommodation, and ability to support dependents. In most cases, both parents must be sponsored together unless official documentation justifies an exception.

Domestic workers

Domestic workers such as maids, nannies, or drivers can be sponsored under Federal Decree-Law No. 9 of 2022.

Sponsorship is processed either through licensed Tadbeer centres or directly by the sponsor, depending on the case.

Document checklist and legalization

Mandatory documents

  • Passport copies of sponsor and dependents
  • Recent passport-sized photographs
  • Attested marriage certificate (spouse)
  • Attested birth certificates (children)
  • Salary certificate or labour contract

MOFA attestation

All documents must be attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the country of origin and then by UAE MOFA.

Apostille documents are not accepted in the UAE—full legalization is required.

Step-by-step family sponsorship process

The process is usually completed within 3–7 working days for straightforward cases.

Entry permit: Apply for a dependent entry permit whether the person is inside or outside the UAE.

Status change: Required if the dependent is already in the UAE on another visa (e.g., tourist visa).

Medical fitness test: Mandatory for applicants aged 18 and above, screening for communicable diseases.

Biometrics and Emirates ID: Fingerprints and iris scans are collected at ICP centres.

Health insurance: Mandatory UAE-compliant insurance must be activated.

Visa issuance: Residency is issued digitally and linked to Emirates ID.

Estimated costs for family sponsorship

The cost varies depending on visa type, emirate, and processing authority (GDRFA or ICP).

Costs typically include visa fees, medical tests, Emirates ID issuance, insurance, and typing center charges. Final pricing depends on individual cases and selected service packages.

Renewal, fines and grace periods for family visas

Grace period: After a family visa expires or is cancelled, residents are usually given a grace period of 30 to 60 days to either renew the visa or leave the country. In some specific visa categories, this grace period can extend up to 6 months.

Overstay fines: As of 2026, overstaying a visa in the UAE typically results in a standard fine of AED 50 per day. This applies across most visa categories unless specific exemptions are granted.

180-day rule: Standard UAE residence visas are generally cancelled if the holder remains outside the country for more than 180 consecutive days. However, in many cases, residents can apply for a “Permit to Stay Outside the UAE for More Than 6 Months” by paying AED 100 per 30 days.

Special provisions: In sensitive cases such as divorce or widowhood, UAE authorities may grant a one-year self-sponsored extension. This allows the affected family members time to adjust their status and make necessary arrangements.
